Christ the King Lutheran Church, Gladwin, Michigan
Annual Appeal Increased by $10,000
Christ the King Lutheran Church in Gladwin, Michigan, was referred to GSB because its regular budget shortfalls meant it would drain the last of its reserve funds within 18 months or less. As a small congregation in a small community, it focused on the resources it did not have. As a community, it was anxious and fearful for the future.
Working with GSB, they undertook a careful analysis of income and expenses, which helped identify some of their challenges. Their GSB consultant helped find cost-effective ways of training staff and managing the technological challenges of being a church today.
Then, they followed the Stewardship for All Seasons model and identified goals for the coming year. In their case, the most expensive goal was Sustaining Ministry Excellence. But they also knew they are called to more than simply exist. Their other two goals focused on equipping staff and volunteers and ensuring their Blessing Box (a free food resource in front of the church) was always well stocked.
In total, their hoped-for annual increase was $10,000, with 50 returned intent cards.
Then, they started telling their stories. For three weeks, folks shared ways the church had made a difference in their lives. On intent Sunday, they did not meet their goal of returned intent cards, but they exceeded their financial goal by almost $3,000.
Now, they look to the future with more hope and more confidence. There are plenty of challenges ahead for them, but now they know that when they invite people to be part of the church’s mission, the response is glorious.
